What is the type of propellant of the ejector ?
The propellant gas is a neutral gas (nitrogen, CO2 or argon) with no impact on the equipment. Nothing to do with car airbags.
These types of gases are used in motorcycle airbags, riding and more recently in the prevention of falls of the elderly, which is to say their safety.
In the vast majority of cases, it is sufficient to use CO2. For more severe conditions (high altitude, very cold weather), it is better to use Argon to avoid any icing. This only requires a cartridge change.
Does the system present a risk to the harness or parachute ?
No None. The propellant is neutral and the initiator is sealed.
There is no temperature increase. On the contrary the whole device will be cooled by the expansion of the gas.
Can we fly with this ejector ?
Yes, it is possible to fly with the mechanical ejector. The IATA standard allows two neutral gas cartridges per person to be carried in the hold. For the pyrotechnic ejector, it is necessary to inquire with the company, the device being considered generally as rescue device.
It is not necessary to disassemble the device to put it in the hold.
Why did you give up direct access to a handle ?
It is true that this option was initially planned. Although technically validated, it is not implemented for two reasons:
The risk of incorrect mounting of a manual handle is much greater than the risk of failure of a pneumatic ejector that allows a smooth configuration of the harness. But if the paraglider has forgotten to put a battery or a loaded cartridge, the action on the handle unlocks the flaps and a handle is immediately accessible.
For the anecdote, the day of my last test, a relief was opened then the takeoff of a paraglider causing a return to the slope. I did not hear from the paraglider, but the witnesses described a major shock.
Do you produce this type of ejector ?
No, we are paragliders passionate about this sport, innovation and design.
We will hand over to the saddle manufacturers for the exploitation of our validated concepts.
Does this ejector pose a risk to third parties ?
No, for two reasons :
The energy transmitted to a third is set the energy standard transmitted by a drone connected to a parachute required by the Civil Aviation.
The system only activates when the ventral is locked. There is no risk of ejection, harness placed on the ground or in a car.
Will this ejector be expensive?
The airbag consists of simple elements in very small numbers. It is this simplicity that makes it reliable.
But, the additional cost will include the development, certification, manufacture of a suitable harness and airbag.
It should be reasonable with regard to the added safety it provides to paragliders or para-motorists.
Can it be connected to an automatism or a remote control ?
Yes, the ejector can be connected to a remote control. This is certainly one of its main advantages.
This can avoid a situation (which has ended well) as in the small video opposite.
At an accelerometer, why not? But the flight parameters of a paraglider are very extensive and their analysis is complex.
But is it the spirit of free flight?
With permission of M. the paraglider
Does it take a lot of space ?
No. The striker and the gas cartridge are easily placed in the emergency pocket. The entirety of the tests were carried out with ligtht harness.
Likewise, pressing on one of the sides of the emergency parachute, its presence does not modify the damping of the airbag of the harness in the event of a fall.
Can I make it myself ?
It sounds simple, but I strongly advise against it.
An ejector requires adaptations of the harness from the design by the manufacturer to be perfectly reliable.
This must resist the recoil induced by the ejection, the pocket must resist twisting to avoid jamming and unlocking the shutters must be perfectly synchronized with the ejection.
What type of battery is used?
The battery can be very small, the initiation does not require a great energy.
In this respect, like any aeronautical safety device, tripping is provided by two power supplies and two independent circuits and disconnected during disarming.
